Happy Gay Pride!
It was the perfect summer weekend here in the Bay Area. I did not make it up to San Francisco this year for the celebration but it was clearly an amazing day. And here in Palo Alto, it got to 100 degrees. When this is the case, in a house without air conditioning, baking is not ideal. Traditional baking that is. So, instead I turned to an American classic: rice krispie treats. No oven baking required. And what better theme than equality? And what better symbol than rainbow?
When Fabien saw me making these he announced that were the most creative dessert he’d ever seen my make. I announced to him how sweet he was to say that, and that this it he first dessert most kids in America grow up learning how to make. I still took the compliment though, noting that I should make these next time I’m in France.
The compliment fizzled a bit though when he tried them. He barely got through half a bar before saying, “these are so sweet. Like, sweet, sweet.” He’s right. These are super sweet. I swapped regular, naturally sugar free, plain rice krispie cereal for the sugar-full rainbow fruity pebbles cereal. They are certainly the sweetest dessert I have on the blog. Luckily, my six nieces and nephews came by and plowed through them, one of them announcing, “This is the best dessert I’ve ever eaten!!” Sugar for the win.
Needless to say, these are beautiful because of their color and what they symbolize, and palate wise, they are the perfect dessert for a kid crowd. And in all honesty, I certainly did my part is helping polish them off.
Rice Krispie Treats are a classic for a reason. They are insanely easy because they only have three ingredients: butter, marshmallows and cereal. They require no baking, aka, avoiding a hot oven in the middle of summer. And they’re just so good. My favorite way to make them is using plain rice krispie cereal and then once the bars have set, dipping the corners in chocolate. And for the true chocolate lovers, swap the regular rice krispie cereal for cocoa pebbles and sprinkle a few chocolate chips on top for a nice finish.
