Labor Day is coming up!
Now, in honesty, I’ve never made this cake on Labor Day, 4th of July, Memorial Day, or any of those days. I made it for my husband’s citizenship party! This summer he became an American citizen (from France). What better way to honor a new citizen than having a patriotic BBQ with this beautiful (and more importantly delicious) flag cake for dessert? Smitten Kitchen knocks it out of the park *yet again* with this cake.
The secret? Well, there are 3.
- For a super moist and delicate crumb, this cake calls for cake flour. You can swap with all-purpose but I personally think this is the ingredient that makes this cake so delicious and soft.
- Buttermilk. Moisture, moisture, moisture.
- Aesthetically pleasing. You first point of digestion is through your eyes and this cake is beautiful with it’s fresh berries decorated as an American flag.
I mostly made this cake because of point #3. The flavor and texture came second in my priority this time. So when I took a bite, I was shocked! As were the guests. I guess being the baker amongst the people I love, there’s a bit of pressure to deliver. So I’m glad that I was able to deliver something even more delicious than cute!
Happy Labor Day and any other time you decide to celebrate with this beautiful flag cake! And if you just want a delicious all-purpose cake, you don’t have to make the flag. You could just frost and top with scattered berries or leave plain. Next time I will likely make it and top with sliced strawberries 🙂
